New mine roller for light vehicles
Specialist vehicle protection systems company Firth has been demonstrating how the Firth Ground Stand-off platform (GSP) has been configured to provide a new stand-off mine blast protection capability for light 4×4 trucks.
Simulating the effect of the front of a light truck, the GSP mine roller is pushed ahead of a truck to detonate land mines away from the truck instead of under it.
Each roller applies a force of at least 410 kgf to detonate pressure influence mines, including anti-tank mines.
The GSP mine roller uses the Firth automatic path tracking system that steers the rollers to closely follow the path to be taken be the truck as travels straight ahead as well as when making turns.
Where mines are not present, the platform can be unhitched and towed behind the truck.
A Firth design engineer explained: “We originally configured this equipment to protect users of the notoriously venerable Snatch Land Rovers from mine blast, but it quickly became obvious that this equipment can also be used to protect the wide variety of light 4X4s being used in combat situations today”.
